This summer when you think of Sauvignon Blanc (SB), the chances are you’ll think of France’s Sancerre or New Zealand’s Marlborough regions. However, there are many regions around the world where this grape excels. Thus, many like me, feel it is the World’s “White Darling.” The Sauvignon Blanc blend in a White Bordeaux might be my favorite. SBs fermented in stainless steel and kept at a low fermentation temperature retain their aromatic quality. A few special SBs are fermented then barrel-aged which can soften the acidity and vegetal flavors while also adding some spice and vanilla notes. Most SBs are meant to be drunk young, but some, such as White Bordeaux can age 10-30 yrs. Check technical sheets for their guidance on age-worthy wines.
Let’s explore some of the SBs of the world. Additional appropriate regions with similar terroir to the major producing areas are being discovered all the time.
France, Sancerre
Sancerre is a small wine district which covers a 15-mile stretch in central France in the Loire Valley. It is renowned for its crisp, aromatic Sauvignon Blanc wine style. Sancerre’s soils, Kimmeridgian limestone, flint, and clay-limestone marls turn Sauvignon Blanc into wine of crackling, vibrant acidity, citrus flavors, smoke, and flinty minerality. The Sancerre AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) can also produce red and rosé wines from Pinot Noir, but the white SB is the most famous and most widely produced. Pair Sancerre with a high-quality goat cheese. Another great region in the Loire Valley for SBs is Pouilly-Fumé where wine tends to be smoky with green fruits and slate notes. See Wine Recommendations below.
France, White Bordeaux
White Bordeaux or Bordeaux Blanc is a white wine produced in the Bordeaux region of France. It is typically a blend of grapes with Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon being the most common varieties with Muscadelle, Sauvignon Gris, Merlot Blanc, Colombard, and Mauzac also allowed. The flavor profiles range from light and fruity to rich and creamy. It is noteworthy that White Bordeaux wines can age well for 10+ years and some for even 30 years particularly from top producers like those in Pessac-Leognan. See: “Domaine de Chevalier: An Interview with Olivier Bernard,” Wine Wanderings, August 29, 2023 (This family estate is in the Pessac-Léognan region of Bordeaux and is considered one of the top producers. Following our tasting in 2023 I concluded that this is the finest white wine I have ever tasted.) More affordable White Bordeaux are also produced in the region. Other regions of France which produce Sauvignon Blanc include Roussillon and Sauvignon de Touraine. See Wine Recommendations below.
Marlborough, New Zealand
Marlborough has emerged as one of the highest quality places in the world to find superb Sauvignon Blanc. Montana (now Brancott Estate) planted the first vines in 1973, with the first commercial release in 1979. By the 1980s, Marlborough gained recognition for its unique expression of SB. Although France is SBs famous home, New Zealand is now known as its spiritual home. Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW), May 29, 2025, launched an Interactive Online Map giving details of each sub-region with its climate, soil, and wine characteristics. If you love Marlborough wine, check it out and visit the many tasting rooms throughout the region. Other regions of New Zealand also excel at Sauvignon Blanc, and they include Nelson Canterbury/Waipara, Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa (Martinborough), Gisborne, and Central Otago. See Wine Recommendations below.
California, Napa Valley
Napa Valley has fully embraced their delicious Sauvignon Blanc style. More in the French winemaking genre for comparison, aromas of Granny Smith apples, lemongrass, grapefruit and mandarin with a wet river rock finish are characteristic of the Napa Valley SBs. These wines run from the affordable at $18 to the near-cult-class of $144/bottle wines (Melka). Since I studied at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley, I probably know this Valley’s wines more than most regions. Rudd, St. Supéry, Hall, Chateau Montelena, Chimney Rock (with Sauvignon Gris), and Duckhorn are a few of my favorites. See Wine Recommendations below.
California, Sonoma: Russian River
In Russian River, I definitely have my favorite wineries for Sauvignon Blanc:
Mary Edwards Winery and Gary Farrell Winery. Due to the cool climate and fog, this valley helps maintain the grapes’ acidity and contributes to bright, vibrant flavors. See: “Russian River “Neighborhoods’ Revealed though…Gary Farrell Vineyards and Winery,” Wine Wanderings, May 18, 2021. The Russian River and Pacific Ocean contribute to the unique terroir with its varying microclimates. Merry Edwards, with its beautiful Greek-inspired bottle is my go-to gift of wine. The ripe citrus and white peach flavors, along with a creamy texture, make this a rich SB. Ferrari-Carano in Dry Creek (where they do a smoky Fumé Blanc SB, which simply means the SB was oak-aged) is also a favorite. See Wine Recommendations below.
Other U.S. Regions
Many other US Regions grow and produce Sauvignon Blanc including Washington State (regions: Horse Heaven Hills AVA, Ancient Lakes AVA, Yakima Valley AVA, and Columbia Valley, AVA), Oregon (regions: Willamette Valley, Columbia Valley , and Southern Oregon/Umpqua Valley and Rogue Valley AVAs), New York (regions: Long Island, Finger Lakes, and Hudson River region), and Texas (regions: Hill Country AVA and Texas High Plains AVA). Other California regions of quality include Sonoma Coast, Carneros, Mendocino, Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Arroyo Seco/Monterey County, Santa Ynez, Lake County, San Joaquin County, and Happy Canyon/Santa Barbara County.
Australia
It’s a hot day. Grilled “Shrimp on the Barbie.” (Outback and Oh So Delicioso recipe.) Many fine Sauvignon Blanc wines are made in Australia. Adelaide Hills in South Australia is known for its crisp, fresh, grassy styles with high acidity. Margaret River in Western Australia produces zippy wines with tropical fruit characteristics. The Yarra Valley in Victoria and Tasmania also deliver exceptional Sauvignon Blanc wines. Pair with the grilled shrimp with a crisp Caesar salad. See Wine Recommendations below.
Chile, Casablanca Leyda Valleys
Chile’s reputation as a producer of world-class Sauvignon Blanc is growing. In the valleys of Casablanca and Leyda, located along the Pacific coastline, the Humboldt current (originating in Antarctica), morning fog, and granite soils help shape the flavor profiles. Many of the growers here utilize organic, biodynamic, and regenerative practices. Citrus and tropical fruit notes and flavors, along with the elevated acidity, lead to a freshness and minerality sought in great Sauvignon Blanc wines. See Wine Recommendations below.
Rest of World Sauvignon Blanc
Many other areas of the world have climates that are appropriate for growing Sauvignon Blanc and these regions have embraced its popularity. Primarily the countries include the areas of South Africa (regions: Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Elgin, and Constantia), Romania (regions: Transylvania and Blac Sea Coast in the Dobrogea region), Canada (regions: Niagara Peninsula/Ontario, British Columbia/Okanagan Valley, Lake Erie North Shore, and Prince Edward County), Bulgaria (regions: Thracian Valley, and Danube Plain), Austria (regions: Steiermark/Styria, Burgenland, and Niederösterreich/Lower Austria), Spain (regions: Rueda, Catalonia, Ribera del Duero, and Rias Baixas), Italy (regions” Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trentino-Alto Adige), and Greece (regions: Macedonia and Thrace).

Another great post Tricia. This one is a keeper. I couldn’t agree with you more about Merry Edwards. I shall look forward to experimenting with some Bordeaux Blanc. Cheers!
I have never had a proper Sancerre. Perhaps if I did it would change my mind. All I seem to get offered SB-wise is Oyster Bay. PG in both guises is my preference.
