The Origin of Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day in the United States started in 1908. The founder, Anna Jarvis, introduced this day as a holiday in celebration of the life of her mother, Anna Reeves Jarvis, who passed away in 1905. She suggested this holiday was a way to honor the sacrifices that mothers make for their children. Mother’s Day became an official US holiday in 1914.
Later Anna Jarvis denounced the commercialization of the holiday and spent the rest of her life trying to remove it from the calendar. Hallmark Cards and the florists of the USA would have hated that! I have suggestions other than flowers and candy for the mom who loves wine. Look for the wines, wine preservation, stoppers, books, and gift subscriptions suggested below and treat your mom to a unique gift.
Giving Wines As Mother’s Day Gifts
Whether you choose a sparkling wine, refreshing white, crisp Rosé wine, or a luscious red, you cannot go wrong with these special selections as a gift or dinner offering. Since I am a mother to two exceptional sons, I know that I would love to receive these wines. I hope these suggestions will be a wonderful change for your wine-loving mom. Happy Mother’s Day!
Sparkling Wines
Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut, Champagne, France, $60
An affordable and delicious Champagne from the Champagne House run by the first woman, “the widow Clicquot.” A Pinot Noir dominated Champagne with perfect balance and structure.
2020 Villa Sandi II Fresco Prosecco Rose Millesimato, Prosecco, Italy
This is affordable – and it's the newly approved style of Prosecco – rosé Prosecco. Be on-trend and give your mom something new in the wine world. This wine has pink and copper hues and offers a bouquet of red fruits and floral notes. Beautiful in a fluted glass!
Chardonnay – for the Mom (Like my friend, Linda) who loves this varietal above all.
2019 Rombauer Chardonnay, Carneros (Napa and Sonoma), CA, $40
This is a classic Chardonnay made by a very high quality producer who has tapped into a style of Chardonnay that is uber-popular. It is sometimes referred to as “housewife crack.” Butter, spice, peach, and vanilla dominate. Perfect for your lobster roll luncheon.
Rosé Wine
2019 Chateau d’Esclans Whispering Angel, Rose, Côtes de Provence, France, $25
One of my all-time favorite Rosé’s in the world…for all the angel moms.
Merlot
2017 Duckhorn Three Palms Merlot, Napa Valley, CA, $109
Splurge on the ultimate Merlot, perfect for your red wine-drinking mom. This Merlot is one of the top rated in California, and the world at 96 point in Wine Spectator. Your mom will be impressed with the well-managed tannins of this full-bodied Merlot. Luxurious aromas of black cherry, plum, raspberry, and cedar rise from the glass. A long, resonant finish….
Wine Accessories for Mom
The Best Value Bottle Stoppers:
For those who don’t consume a whole bottle themselves, these stoppers are affordable and make great gifts. Remember to stopper and refrigerate wine for up to 3 days to preserve its freshness.
Rabbit Wine and Beverage Bottle Stoppers with Grip Top (4), $8
Champagne Stoppers
For that bottle of Veuve Clicquot you bought her. I actually have three of these for the occasion where you have several types of Champagne or sparkling wine open.
Champagne Stoppers by Kloveo – with patented Seal, $22.50
Advanced Wine Preservation
– the Coravin Model Three Advanced Wine Bottle Opener and Preservation System.
For the wine collector, you’ll want to have this preservation system at your disposal. I have one which I used on my collectible wines that I want to taste over a long period of time. The needle extracts only the amount of wine you want, then the cork seals back. The system then adds inert gas to the remainder of the wine contents to preserve the wine for additional months or years.
